Psalm 56.5-6 All day long they injure my cause; all their thoughts are against me for evil.

Psalm 56.5-6
All day long they injure my cause; all their thoughts are against me for evil. They stir up strife, they lurk; they watch my steps, as they have waited for my life.

Lord, make me aware of the many pitfalls and snares constructed against me by the Evil One. Help me always to be alert to his jihad and to the ingenious ways he camouflages these entrapments, even to the use of “The Lord’s Work” as a means of drawing me away from You.

Psalm 56.3-4 When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust;

Psalm 56.3-4
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?

Not only flesh, but the spirits of the devil. In Your trust, in Your arms, I am secure. There is no cause for fear, no reason to stew and fret; all the details and events of my life are in Your hands; I have Your promise that all things work together for good for one who loves You and seeks to follow in your Word.

Psalm 56.1-2 Be gracious to me, O God, for man tramples on me;

Psalm 56.1-2
To the choirmaster: according to The Dove on Far-off Terebinths. A Miktam of David, when the Philistines seized him in Gath.

Be gracious to me, O God, for man tramples on me; all day long an attacker oppresses me; my enemies trample on me all day long, for many attack me proudly.

Lord, my enemies are self-will, pride, covetousness, and other sins of one who sets himself up as his own god. They never cease their assaults, they are tireless, fueled and driven by the obsession of the Evil One to rip one of Yours from your arms.

Exodus 20.1-2, 8-11 And God spoke all these words, saying, “…Remember the Sabbath day,

Exodus 20:1-2, 8-11

And God spoke all these words, saying, "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. ... "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Give me greater understanding of the import of this commandment. Perhaps in no other area, is the testimony of your church more weak and lax. Show me how to lead, both by example and by winsome word. That my life would be a life of observing your Sabbath, long before I begin to lecture others.

Psalm 55:16-23 But I call to God, and the LORD will save me.

Psalm 55:16-23
But I call to God, and the LORD will save me. Evening and morning and at noon I utter my complaint and moan, and he hears my voice. He redeems my soul in safety from the battle that I wage, for many are arrayed against me. God will give ear and humble them, he who is enthroned from of old, Selah because they do not change and do not fear God. My companion stretched out his hand against his friends; he violated his covenant. His speech was smooth as butter, yet war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords. Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved. But you, O God, will cast them down into the pit of destruction; men of blood and treachery shall not live out half their days. But I will trust in you.

Lord, we am casting our burden of inattention on You. We am coming to You, confessing that this is a sin, primarily of self and that our desire is to be freed of it. We want to walk with You, we want to commune with You, we want awareness of Your Presence in our lives. We want to become new men in every aspect and corner of our lives.

Lord, there are still many, many chunks of gravel from the old heart that are sharp shards in that new heart you have given me. Guide my broom as the Holy Spirit shows me where the floor needs swept.

Thank You, Lord, for You do take over our anxieties and depressions, You do set Your might and power against those who would afflict us. May You name be praised in the assemblies of Your people.

Psalm 55:9-15 Destroy, O Lord, divide their tongues; for I see violence and strife in the city.

Psalm 55:9-15
Destroy, O Lord, divide their tongues; for I see violence and strife in the city. Day and night they go around it on its walls, and iniquity and trouble are within it; ruin is in its midst; oppression and fraud do not depart from its marketplace. For it is not an enemy who taunts me-- then I could bear it; it is not an adversary who deals insolently with me-- then I could hide from him. But it is you, a man, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend. We used to take sweet counsel together; within God's house we walked in the throng. Let death steal over them; let them go down to Sheol alive; for evil is in their dwelling place and in their heart.

Lord, stand between us and our inflicters. Shield us with Your mighty arm. Cover us with Your outstretched wings. Hold us in the palm of Your hand. Give us that peace that passes all understanding in the face of affliction by the Evil One. Teach us that as You forgave Your tormentors, so we are to forgive ours. Lead us, our Lord

Even You, my Lord, suffered from the desertion of close friends, fleeing and denying that they ever knew You. You have gone before, You know what it is to be forsaken and abandoned by loved ones. And You forgave those who reviled You.

Psalm 55:1-3 Give ear to my prayer, O God, and hide not yourself from my plea for mercy!

Isaiah 9:6-7 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (7) Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

Psalm 55:1-3 To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Maskil of David.
Give ear to my prayer, O God, and hide not yourself from my plea for mercy! Attend to me, and answer me; I am restless in my complaint and I moan, because of the noise of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked. For they drop trouble upon me, and in anger they bear a grudge against me.

Sometimes, Lord, the enemy mounts attack upon attack upon one or more of us and we all suffer.. Sometimes the assault takes the form of depression and anxiety, sometimes it is a problem with family members or even fellow believers. Sometimes, insidiously quiet and seemingly unoffensive; at other times up front and in your face. Lord, hear our plea; do not hide Yourself from Your people.

Psalm 119:169-172 Let my cry come before you, O LORD; give me understanding according to your word!

Psalm 119:169-172
Let my cry come before you, O LORD; give me understanding according to your word! Let my plea come before you; deliver me according to your word. My lips will pour forth praise, for you teach me your statutes. My tongue will sing of your word, for all your commandments are right.

Understanding is not the end that You desire for me, my Lord, deliverance is not the goal, learning is not the final reward. No, glorifying You, pouring out praise, singing of Your word, living Your word, carrying Your word into the world, being Your ambassador; this is the goal that You set for me. May my obedience shine before You today.

Psalm 54:4-7 Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life.

Psalm 54:4-7

Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life. He will return the evil to my enemies; in your faithfulness put an end to them. With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you; I will give thanks to your name, O LORD, for it is good. For He has delivered me from every trouble, and my eye has looked in triumph on my enemies.

Romans 12:1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

Not just my body, Lord, but my heart, soul and mind also to be my freewill offering and living sacrifice to You. Let Your praises and my thanksgivings be in my mouth continuously today. You provide wisdom and discernment to protect me from the Ziphites and to propound the fullness of Your Law as compared to a weak, flabby, emasculated vision.

You stand between me and those strong bulls of Bashan who would tear, gore and trample me. You are a shield about me. It is Your love and sacrifice that cleansed me, it is Your Word that is my map and guidebook, it is the Holy Spirit that teaches me and leads me into all Truth.

Praise You, Lord.

Psalm 54:1-3 " O God, save me by your name, and vindicate me by your might. O God,

Psalm 54:1-3 To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Maskil of David, when the Ziphites went and told Saul, "Is not David hiding among us?

" O God, save me by your name, and vindicate me by your might. O God, hear my prayer; give ear to the words of my mouth. For strangers have risen against me; ruthless men seek my life; they do not set God before themselves. Selah

The Ziphities come in many guises and forms, but with common intent to destroy my communion with You. Some even are wearing the cloak of righteousness, declaring that they speak revelation from You, but their words betray them for their intent is to limit Your Word.

Save me from false paths, empower me to speak Your truth in love, to be able to explain the hope that lies within me in gentleness and respect.

Exodus 20.1-2, 7 "...You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain,"

Exodus 20:1-2,7

And God spoke all these words, saying, "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. ... "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

A most precious name, for it is the only name given among men whereby we might be saved. Let every utterance of your name today be one of praise and thanksgiving. Let today be a day of seeking your guidance and wisdom.

Psalm 53:6 Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! Psalm 53:6 Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!

Psalm 53:6

Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When God restores the fortunes of his people, let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.

The salvation for Israel has come out of Zion and has come to all the nations of the world. You have restored the fortunes of all the peoples, let us rejoice and be glad. Let us not forget that our God is an awesome God.

Psalm 53:1-5 The fool says in his heart, "There is no God."

Psalm 53:1-5 To the choirmaster: according to Mahalath. A Maskil of David.

The fool says in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, doing abominable iniquity; there is none who does good. God looks down from heaven on the children of man to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all fallen away; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one. Have those who work evil no knowledge, who eat up my people as they eat bread, and do not call upon God? There they are, in great terror, where there is no terror! For God scatters the bones of him who encamps against you; you put them to shame, for God has rejected them.

Great evil has corrupted your creation. We, the work of your hand, are abominable in your sight, filled with iniquity, self-worshiping, seeking our own understanding. There is none righteous, no not one.

Psalm 119:159 Consider how I love Your precepts! Give me life according to Your steadfast love.

Psalm 119:159

Consider how I love Your precepts! Give me life according to Your steadfast love.

Lord, guide my life so that I can and do live according to Your precepts and steadfast love. Give me understanding so that I can live; so that I am not filled with disgust by my disobedient ways. Lead me into a life of "smiling and sharing the love of Jesus," not as an occasional conversation or preaching but as a way of life.

Psalm 119:157 Many are my persecutors and my adversaries,

Psalm 119:157

Many are my persecutors and my adversaries, but I do not swerve from your testimonies.

Lord, so many of the persecutors and adversaries are the little things of life that fill my day. Filling the woodbox, running an errand, cooking breakfast, visiting with a friend, all distract me from being aware of your Presence. I need to be more intentional about practicing your Presence.

This certainly is a "I believe, Lord, help me in my unbelief" situation in my life. I want to live in your Presence. I want to be able to join with the Psalmist and not swerve from your righteous and just testimonies. I hunger for that awareness of You.

Lord, open the eyes of my heart and show me where sin still obscures my vision.

Psalm 52:8-9 But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God.

Psalm 52:8-9

But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God. I trust in the steadfast love of God forever and ever. I will thank You forever, because You have done it. I will wait for Your name, for it is good, in the presence of the godly.

Thank You, Lord, You have brought me into Your steadfast love, where I can grow and flourish like a young tree, a sapling to be bent and formed to Your will.

Thank You for the many of Your saints with which You have surrounded me. Thank You for the encouragement and strength that flows from You through them. Thank You for the Holy Spirit who unites all of us into Your Body.

Psalm 52:1-7 " Why do you boast of evil, O mighty man?

Psalm 52:1-7 To the choirmaster. A Maskil of David, when Doeg, the Edomite, came and told Saul, "David has come to the house of Ahimelech.

" Why do you boast of evil, O mighty man? The steadfast love of God endures all the day. Your tongue plots destruction, like a sharp razor, you worker of deceit. You love evil more than good, and lying more than speaking what is right. Selah You love all words that devour, O deceitful tongue. But God will break you down forever; He will snatch and tear you from your tent; He will uproot you from the land of the living. Selah The righteous shall see and fear, and shall laugh at him, saying, "See the man who would not make God his refuge, but trusted in the abundance of his riches and sought refuge in his own destruction!"

Lord, You know the young man who is on my heart, one who claims to know You and be obedient to You, but whose every action speaks of his dependence upon his own strength and wisdom. The words of obedience but the actions of self-will.

Lord, be merciful to him, bring him to a place of complete abandonment, where he can no longer turn to his own strength but has to trust in Your grace. Fill him with contrition and remorse, empty him of pride of self and fill him with passion for Your presence.

Exodus 20.1-2, 4-6 And God spoke ..., saying, “You shall not make for yourself a carved image,

Exodus 20.1-2, 4-6

And God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery…You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.”

Where are those things I have constructed to set ahead of you? What are they, Lord? Give me a searing fire in my conscience against anything which makes me seek You second.

My lack of faithfulness in prayer is one of those things. And it is not a thing; it is lots of little things, the little distractions that I allow to get between me and you.

So, Lord, let my conscience burn within me when I am not listening, meditating, or praying as I should be. Help me, through that burning conscience, to develop an addictive prayer habit.

Psalm 119.149-152 Hear my voice according to your steadfast love; O LORD,

Psalm 119.149-152

Hear my voice according to your steadfast love; O LORD, according to your justice give me life. They draw near who persecute me with evil purpose; they are far from your law. But you are near, O LORD, and all your commandments are true. Long have I known from your testimonies that you have founded them forever.

The bulls of Bashan – guilt, greed, pride, lust, covetousness, idolatry – all persecute and assault me; they seek my downfall. They despise You and all who declare fealty to Your Name.

But You are with me, Your commandments are true and reliable to lead me out of danger. I need only to turn to You in moments of attack and rely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit to lead me through the battlefield. Your Word, Your Law are both my armor and my weapons of defense and offense.

Psalm 119.145-148 With my whole heart I cry; answer me, O LORD! I will keep your statutes.

Psalm 119.145-148

With my whole heart I cry; answer me, O LORD! I will keep your statutes. I call to you; save me, that I may observe your testimonies. I rise before dawn and cry for help; I hope in your words. My eyes are awake before the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your promise.

“With my whole heart I cry.” Oh, that it would be so, Lord. I know that there are pockets of resistance, of self, in my heart. You have said that my heart is wicked above all else, and it is so. Those cancers need to be rooted out. The process of enabling me to walk in Your statutes, to observe Your testimonies in all of my life, needs to continue.

Oh what joy it is when I do remember to consider Your promises during the night. Lord, lead me from grumbling that I am awake to a praising of You because of another opportunity to consider the richness of Your Word.

Psalm 51.16-19 For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it;

Psalm 51.16-19

For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. Do good to Zion in your good pleasure; build up the walls of Jerusalem; then will you delight in right sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on your altar.

I come to You with the only thing I have to offer: I give You my will. Accept this sacrifice of obedience, and let me be a faithful servant to You in all things. Build me up and strengthen my walls, for I am Your holy temple. Make me complete in You.

Psalm 51.13-15 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to You.

Psalm 51.13-15

Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to You. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, O God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.

An interesting word, Lord: blood-guiltiness. I've never murdered anyone and neither did David. But he did arrange for Uriah's murder, and I certainly have murdered spirit and enthusiasm at times. His motivation was lust; mine is pride and elevation of self.

How can I teach transgressors when my own transgression is so before me? Deliver me, Lord! Yes, I repent of my pride and idolization of self. Transform me so that I can teach, so that I can lead sinners to You. Transform me so that my lips are open and my mouth declares Your praises from sunrise to sunset.

Psalm 51.6-12 Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom ...

Psalm 51.6-12

Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.

You have purged me with the blood of the Lamb, freely offered and accepted. My sins and iniquities You remember no more.

But Lord, the consequences remain, those stains and that brokenness need bleaching and repair. Therefore my cry is to create a clean, new heart within me, to cut out the spirit of the old man and replace it with your Spirit.

When I don't listen and obey, I lose the joy of Your salvation. Forgive me, Lord and restore me to Your presence. Lead me in the Way Everlasting.

Psalm 51.1-5 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love;

Psalm 51.1-5 To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet went to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.

It has been such a hard lesson, Lord, to realize and accept that all my sin(s) are against You only. It is so much easier to believe in my heart that an offense is against another individual; it is easy to convince myself that I don't have to apologize or even acknowledge the sin.

But You, but You, oh Lord, are the offended One. Yes, the harm to another individual must be acknowledged, repented of, and restitution made; but in all, I must come to You, seeking Your forgiveness in repentance. I must petition You for the tutelage of the Holy Spirit to reform and transform me.

Exodus 20.1-3 And God spoke all these words, saying, “You shall have no other gods before me.”

Exodus 20.1-3

And God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me.”

Show me, LORD, where there are other gods I have put before you. Speak up, Holy Spirit, for I am hard of hearing and easily distracted.

Psalm 50.16-23 But to the wicked God says: “What right have you to recite my statutes or take my covenant on your lips?

Psalm 50.16-23

But to the wicked God says: “What right have you to recite my statutes or take my covenant on your lips? For you hate discipline, and you cast my words behind you. If you see a thief, you are pleased with him, and you keep company with adulterers. You give your mouth free rein for evil, and your tongue frames deceit. You sit and speak against your brother; you slander your own mother’s son. These things you have done, and I have been silent; you thought that I was one like yourself. But now I rebuke you and lay the charge before you. Mark this, then, you who forget God, lest I tear you apart, and there be none to deliver! The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me; to one who orders his way rightly I will show the salvation of God!”

The world demands a god of their understanding, a god they can manipulate in order to get what they want. Their god is a god of weakness and failings like themselves. Their god tears them apart and leaves them in ruin; he cannot deliver.

Ah, but You answer the one who seeks, to “draw near to You and You will draw near to me.” To believe in You is to obey You. My sacrifice of thanksgiving is a sacrifice of obedience. The right ordering of my way is to fear You, for that is the beginning of wisdom. And the fear of You comes through endless praise of You. May Your praise be ever in my mouth!

Psalm 50.7-15 “Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, I will testify against you.

Psalm 50.7-15

“Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, I will testify against you. I am God, your God. Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you; your burnt offerings are continually before me. I will not accept a bull from your house or goats from your folds. For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills. I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine. If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are mine. Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats? Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and perform your vows to the Most High, and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”

The only gifts I have to give You that are not already Yours are my love, obedience, thanksgiving, and praise. These are mine to give or mine to withhold.

I give you my pledge of obedience, together with my love; I will seek to praise You and give You thanksgiving in all circumstances. Forgive me, Lord, for my failings, and lead me in the way everlasting.

The Mighty One, God the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting.

Psalm 50.1-6 A Psalm of Asaph.

The Mighty One, God the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth. Our God comes; he does not keep silence; before him is a devouring fire, around him a mighty tempest. He calls to the heavens above and to the earth, that he may judge his people: “Gather to me my faithful ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!” The heavens declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge! Selah

Lord, You continue the theme of Your constancy, perfection, and sufficiency. You are the just and righteous judge who calls out the faithful.

And how did I make a covenant with You, Lord; what sacrifice did I make? It was and is a sacrifice of self, a pledge of obedience, a laying down of my will and taking up of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. It was and is the declaration that You are Lord and Master of my life. It was and is the bowing of my knee, the confessing of my mouth that You are Jesus Christ the Son of the Living God. It was and is a determination to live my life, through the power of the Holy Spirit, in obedience to Your Word, in every aspect of my life.

Psalm 119.141-142 I am small and despised, yet I do not forget your precepts.

Psalm 119.141-142

I am small and despised, yet I do not forget your precepts. Your righteousness is righteous forever, and your law is true.

Your righteousness never fails; it is true and complete. It provides me with an unfailing guide to lead me into life in the Kingdom. Thank You, Lord, for showing me the way.

Psalm 119.143-144 Trouble and anguish have found me out, but your commandments are my delight.

Wednesday, 3 December 2008
Psalm 119.143-144

Trouble and anguish have found me out, but your commandments are my delight. Your testimonies are righteous forever; give me understanding that I may live.

Even as trouble and anguish beset me, Lord, Your testimonies provide the support and understanding I need to continue. The testimonies of Your Word and the lives of Your saints, as they overcame through Your leadership, sustain me in my own times of trial.

Psalm 119.139-140 My zeal consumes me, because my foes forget your words.

Monday, 1 December 2008
Chester, VT
Psalm 119.139-140

My zeal consumes me, because my foes forget your words. Your promise is well tried, and your servant loves it.

I am learning to trust and depend on Your promises; continue to train me, Lord. Thank You for all those saints You have placed in my path to teach me and to show me what it is to live in Your promises.
